How to Compare & Choose a vWHS Media Server

Learn how to select the best dedicated Media Server for your unique AV setup - by storage and RAID protection needs

How much storage?
Determine the number of discs you need to store

The selection of a server will first start off based on how many DVD & Blu-ray movies need to be stored. On average, 1TB will store up to 165 DVDs or 40 Blu-rays maximum. Music CDs' storage requirements are usually negligible. The storage is shared between Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, and other digital media.

The infographic on the left will easily show which servers are valid options for the project.

If you're not certain about the number of Blu-rays/DVDs that need to be stored, consider choosing the server with the most upgradability, which would be the RackServerV2.

The RackServerV2 can go up to 21TB onboard, and then expand out to 48TB with the RackServerV2+Plus expansion unit.

If massive storage is required right at the beginning of the installation, consider choosing the RACK24, which provides up to 66TB of storage.

Even if you run out of space on any one, single unit, note that you can seamlessly and easily add a server later to grow storage in an unlimited fashion. Simply order the new server, connect it via LAN/CAT5 to the network. VidaBox will configure the system for seamless operation, so there is no lapse in service, & no need to send anything back.

Is RAID Protection Important?
What if you lose movies, pictures, etc. when a hard drive fails?

VidaBox systems with RAID enjoy special data protection against rare but devastating hard drive failures. Conventional systems have no mechanisms to protect against hard drive failures, or rely on unreliable "onboard" solutions.

If a hard drive or mainboard fails, one would lose EVERYTHING on the hard drives - videos, music, pictures - irreplaceable memories.

Some setups may offer less expensive, conventional backups in place of RAID, claiming that it is a suitable equivalent.

While this is better than having no backups at all, relying purely on backups has many disadvantages, such as:

· It takes some time to fully restore a system
  - Time for replacement parts to arrive
 - Time for a technician to repair the unit
· Backups needs to be done on a daily basis
· New content since last backup is vulnerable
· The backup itself may fail

With RAID protection, all these disadvantages are eliminated. Even if one hard drive fails, the system's special hardware takes over and lets the server keep on operating, without interruption! All of your priceless data is still safe and protected.
