How to Compare & Choose a Media Center

Select the best Media Center for your unique setup. See side-by-side comparisons.

How much storage?
Determine the number of discs you need to archive

The selection of a server will first start off based on how many DVD & Blu-ray movies need to be stored. On average, 1TB will store up to 165 DVDs or 40 Blu-rays maximum. Music CDs' storage requirements are usually negligible. The storage is shared between Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, and other digital media.

The infographic on the left will easily show which servers are valid options for the project.

If you're not certain about the number of Blu-rays/DVDs that need to be stored, consider choosing the media center with the field-upgradability, which would be the LUXv2, which can start with 2TB, and then be upgraded to 14TB onboard at any time later.

Even if you run out of space on a RackClientV3, note that you can seamless add a server later on grow storage. Connecting via a single CAT5e/6, there is no lapse in service, & no need to send anything back.

Is RAID Protection Important?
What if you lose movies, pictures, etc. when a hard drive fails?

Select VidaBox systems with RAID options can enjoy special data protection against rare but devastating hard drive failures. Conventional systems have no mechanisms to protect against hard drive failures, or rely on unreliable "onboard" solutions.

If a hard drive or mainboard fails, one would lose EVERYTHING on the hard drives - videos, music, pictures - irreplaceable memories.

Some setups may offer less expensive, conventional backups in place of RAID, claiming that it is a suitable equivalent.

While this is better than having no backups at all, relying purely on backups has many disadvantages, such as:

· It takes some time to fully restore a system
  - Time for replacement parts to arrive
  - Time for a technician to repair the unit
· Backups needs to be done on a daily basis
· New content since last backup is vulnerable
· The backup itself may fail

With RAID protection, all these disadvantages are eliminated. Even if one hard drive fails, the system's special hardware takes over and lets the server keep on operating, without interruption! All of your priceless data is still safe and protected.

Is Expandability Important?
What happens when you run out of space?

Inevitably, your media collection will keep on growing - but can your storage grow to match?

Select media centers like the LUXv2 can upgrade and expand its storage at any time! Easily order a prepared hard drive from VidaBox, and slide it into the field-servicable hard drive bays, and grow your storage along with your collection!

Since Media Centers are ideally designed for one zone, even if you run out of space with the RackClientV3, you can always add a vWHS server at anytime for seamless integration!

What if you need both RAID protection and Expandability? Consider starting with our RackServerV2 or RACK24 - which provide outstanding protection and massive storage!
